Knowledge can be unconsciously transmitted from one mind to another. If one person discovers something it becomes easier for another person faced with the same issues, to arrive at similar solutions. Studies with animals have identified this phenomenon – called Morphic Resonance. On an island off Japan, monkeys were observed washing sweet potatos in a pool, after one isolated individual monkey in a different colony began the process. When milk used to be delivered in bottles to the doorstep, blue tits learnt to peck the lids off to get at the cream. This behaviour didn’t spread out from one starting point. Rather it grew up spontaneously all over the country simultaneously.
We sometimes use this approach in my workshops. If teams are taking a long time to complete an exercise, we tell each one that another team has done it. Very quickly, they come to their own conclusions. When they believe that it CAN be done, it IS done.
It is amazing how the belief that something is possible can lead others onto finding the solution so easily.
And what about you?
- If you knew that someone else had already solved your problem, what would the answer be?
