Start the week with an Empowering Belief - keep this one in mind this week, as you communicate. It is especially important if you aren't getting your message across.
We often blame others for not listening, or for misunderstanding us. This Empowering Belief reminds us that the responsibility for our message is all our own. If other people's response is not what we intended, then it's down to us to improve our communication.
I was lucky enough to be trained in coaching by the great Olympian, David Hemery. One day during training, he gave us a brilliant demonstration of this. We were learn how to laser-coach, by coaching golfers. Hemery was demonstrating how to choose the best possible question to help the golfer improve on one aspect of their game at a time. After the golfer took his first shot, Hemery asked him "What do you want to focus on, to make your next shot even better?" The golfer replied "About 9 inches square."
All of us watching dissolved into laughter, but Hemery applied this Belief of Excellence to manage his own communication, by simply asking the golfer "And what is your focus, which makes '9 inches square' important to you?" The golfer replied "That's the size of the target I'm going to imagine when I take my next shot."
When you apply this belief of excellence, you will take ownership of your own communication AND the response that it gets. What response are you aiming for in your communication this week? How will you adapt your communication to get the response you intend?
