I'm often asked how I got into NLP. Well, it started when I hired a terrific project manager called Mark, for the technology company where I was a Director.
Mark stood out from the crowd - he always delivered on time and on budget, and yet his team never worked overtime. He brought innovative ideas to his technology projects, always focusing on the human element to ensure success. Client issues rarely arose, and when they did, he resolved them with quiet efficiency and courtesy.
When it came to Mark's performance appraisal, I found it hard to find any constructive criticism for him, when all I really wanted to tell him was "Mark, I want to be you!"
Instead, I commented on what I had noticed about the difference he made, and asked him if he could explain what was behind it.
He told me that he had been studying and applying this thing called NLP, based on studying other people who achieved excellent results in any area of their life, and applying their lessons in your own life.
Mark first introduced me to the expression "the difference that makes a difference". You could say that Mark embodied it - he truly was the difference that made a difference to our organisation.
I was intrigued ... I love observing how other people get their results, and I knew I would always be able to learn more, so I took a taster in NLP and the rest, as they say, is history.
Where is Mark now?
Well, he continues to inspire and to innovate, for example developing a beautifully visual project management application based on the use of sticky notes. He now provides his excellent training, consulting, coaching and project management services to organisations throughout the UK and Ireland.
