I love the Autumn - the colours of the trees are so beautiful, and this year, the trees seem to be holding onto their leaves for longer than usual. The woods near us are a kaleidoscope of autumnal colours.
Most of all, I love conkers, and all the possibilities that they promise.
Most mornings as I kick through the leaves there will be a scattering of freshly fallen conkers. I find conkers very nostalgic, triggering memories of many playground conker fights. We tried baking them, or soaking them in vinegar, or just about anything that might toughen up our conkers so that we could be victorious.
At primary school, I remember discovering that you could rub the conker shell against the wall to remove the spiky spines, leaving a velvety soft surface. We used to call these little furry shells "hedgehogs" and keep them in our pockets as pets!
It's been a long time since I made myself a conker-shell hedgehog, but I still fill my pockets with the shiny brown conkers themselves. I have put one on my desk in front of me as I write this. Conkers have a new meaning for me now - inside that small, glistening horse chestnut is all the potential for one of largest trees many of us will ever see.
The horse chestnut tree which will grow from my conker may grow up to 130 feet tall, and could live for 300 years. Its leaves will be huge, like a leafy hand with up to nine fingers each up to a foot long. It will spread its branches wide, creating a habitat for millions of bugs and tiny creatures and providing food for hundreds more. Its bark can make medicines to treat cramps, ulcers and circulatory problems.
That little conker already contains within it everything it needs for all the changes that it will undertake in its long life.
And so do humans - there is an essential NLP principle that people have all the resources they need to make whatever change they want.
So take a moment to reflect on all the resources you already have within you:
