In our NLP trainings we often talk about magic with language, and one of our Master Classes is called “Magic Words” – but in reality, all words are magic, and you really do create as you speak.
Whenever you put a thought into words, you magic up a reality for that thought. The words somehow become concrete.
This happened to our client, Bernadette. After making one small mistake at work, she started to tell herself she was incompentent. The more she did this, the more she believed it, and began to doubt herself. Beliefs like these tend to have a way of becoming self-fulfilling. Bernadette’s internal self-doubt started to project an air of incompetence. Others around her picked up on that and respond to you accordingly. She could see them questioning her input, and feel them switching off to her, which reinforced your self-belief.
Do you have some of this negative magic in your life? You can notice it in your words, in your self-beliefs, in your actions, or in the way that other people respond to you. Your words create your beliefs, which determine your actions. You get feedback from others which in turn reinforces your beliefs.
So what about using your words to create good magic. When you say to yourself “I can find a way through this”, or “I am more than capable”, then you create the beginnings of an empowering belief in your own capability.
Bernadette began to remind herself “I am a strong, confident, professional. I work hard and I get good results”.
The good news is that beliefs like these ALSO tend to have a way of becoming self-fulfilling. Bernadette began to project an air of capability, which others responded to. Their responses reinforced her self-belief.
The language we use to others can also “come true”. If you consistently tell someone that they’re lazy, or a bully, they will tend to start to behave in a way that is consistent with those labels. If you tell them that they’re smart, funny, quick, hard-working or any other valuable qualities, then they will tend to behave in ways that are consistent with those empowering alternatives.
Abracadabra! Say it the way you want it, because your words will magically become your reality
